You don't have to worry about spoiling and they take up little
space.
Should you eat canned food? Well, that is a hard question to
answer. If you can get the item fresh, I would say that you should get
the item fresh. If on the other hand you are like me and live inland,
something like canned tuna is about the only way you will get any
tuna.
Canned fish is a great thing even if you do have fresh available
to you. It is great because it is already cooked and ready for you to
do whatever you want to do to it. You can easily add a can of tuna to
a salad or make a quick tuna salad for sandwiches or whatever. Also it
can be great right out of the can. Since it is fully cooked, you don't
have to worry about cooking it or it going bad. Canned tuna has become
a staple in my life.
What should you avoid?
I could write a whole book on this. There are
many canned items that you should avoid.
You should avoid any processed meats. This go for Spam, Vienna
Sausages, Deviled Ham, and corned beef hash. The problem is, these are
loaded with fat and salt. They are processed meats. I'm not sure
exactly what this means, but I suspect that it means that they do
whatever they want to the meat. Seriously though, there is a lot of
ugly cuts of meat in these. Some of it is just scraps and other cheap
items. I would also stay away from anything that is already made.
Don't get lured into that pasta that looks so good on TV. It will be
loaded with salt and a ton of things that you don't want to put in
your body. If you are craving pasta, make it yourself. It is a lot
better for you.
Fruits can be great canned. Especially if you are eating fruit
that is out of season or expensive in your area. The problem is, some
of these canned fruits will be loaded with sugar. Make sure that you
don't get the ones that are in light or heavy syrup. That means there
is sugar in it.
So, what should you look for in a canned item?
Let's
talk about this for a few minutes.
You should look for things that are either no salt or low salt.
These sneaky people can load up the salt if you don't watch. They will
add it to all things. All food should be clearly labeled about what
the contents are. There should be no guess work. If something isn't,
don't buy it. You don't know what is in it if they don't tell you!
Don't buy already prepared stuff. Run like hell from this. This
is almost on the same level of fast food. Also, those healthy choice
items are a joke. I mean, they are so bland you will end up eating so
much more of that stuff, it is pointless. You will end up getting more
fat and calories than if you had ate the real stuff. Don't buy stuff
with added sugar. There might be some times that you may want to buy
something with added sugar. Especially if you are having guests over
for dinner and you want to serve them some canned fruit. But, 99% it
is nothing more than wasted calories. Fruit is sweet enough, you don't
need to add sugar too it.
I would stay away from anything that is loaded with processed
meats. These tend to be the already made food items. They will always
be high in fat. If you want to get that much fat, eat something that
tastes good. That way you are filling your craving for such things.
Here is a few quick and easy canned food ideas.
Making a steak on the grill? Throw a can of peas in the microwave
for a few minutes and eat them as a side dish. Peas are great with
steak. Boil some pasta. Put about one table spoon of butter in it and
stir it completely through the pasta. Add a can of tuna and stir
again. I love eating this. Nothing makes my day like this simple dish.
It is simple, but yet it tastes good too.
There you go. Some ideas on canned
food. It can be a good alternative, just make sure you read the labels
so you know what is in the can. |
